If you believe that your cough or seasonal flu-like symptoms will go away over time or with the help of over-the-counter medications and antibiotics, you need to reconsider. Smog, in particular, is a deadly form of air pollution.
Around 7 million people die from air pollution-related causes worldwide yearly, or around 800 people each hour. In addition, there are 600,000 deaths from respiratory tract infections in children under the age of 15.
According to 2019 research from Amnesty International (AI), 22% of deaths in Pakistan in 2015 were attributed to pollution. However, it is important to remember that most people did not even know what the word “smog” meant in 2015. Since then, smog and general air pollution have grown significantly.
More recently, it was revealed that pollution causes Pakistani citizens to live shorter lives by an average of 2.7 years. Lahoris, however, lose 5.3 years from their average lifespan. 135,000 Pakistanis lose their lives to pollution each year.
So, if you believe that itchy eyes and a scratchy throat brought on by smog will go away with time and may be soothed with water, reconsider since respiratory disorders like:
- Emphysema
- Asthma
- Lung disease that is chronically obstructed (COPD)
- Persistent bronchitis
Smog affects not only lung growth but also the heart. People who are more prone to breathe in contaminated air over an extended period are more likely to experience the following:
- Bleeding stroke
- Cholesterol build-up in arteries
- Reduction in good cholesterol
- Pregnancy-related hypertensive diseases that cause preterm delivery, low birth weight, mother and foetal sickness, and even death
- Mammary cancer
- Lymphoma without Hodgkin's
- Chest cancer
As previously indicated, children are also affected by smog. Those who are exposed to air pollution may experience the following:
- Breathing infections
- Asthma
- Lung damage due to bronchitis
Is Air Purifier the Only Solution?
Let’s get one thing straight; an air purifier is not the only remedy for every health issue caused by smog. But, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), ventilation in your home with purer outdoor air is the greatest way to breathe clean air.
It’s simpler for Americans to say. It entails relocating to Gilgit-Baltistan in Pakistan. Purchasing the best air purifier is your only viable option unless you are one of the fortunate few with the financial means to relocate permanently or for an extended period up north.
Pros and Cons
There are limitations to the most effective air purifiers. Some, if not all, cannot completely purify the air you breathe. They eliminate airborne allergens. However, they cannot access allergens that have already fallen to the ground.
Other air filters may cause more harm than benefit. These are typically the ones that produce ozone and have ionising functions. Others can remove a specific kind of pollution. But additionally, they must operate nonstop for their best benefit, which inevitably results in a greater electricity bill.
Despite their limitations, air purifiers are incredibly helpful for lowering the pollution levels in your home. This is because they work well to reduce airborne particles like smoke, pollen, and dust.
Advantages of Air Purifiers
Improved breathing
Those with asthma and other respiratory conditions should experience improvement when it comes to coughing and wheezing. Only when they are using an air purifier with a HEPA filter, do they experience this, though.
Kids
Cleaning is typically required frequently in a home with many children. However, not all dust and dirt particles, as was previously said, can be seen and cleaned. Therefore, using an air purifier is beneficial.
Smokers
Using an air purifier should be beneficial if you smoke or live with someone who smokes. Compared to pollen and dust, tobacco smoke produces the smallest particles, and only a HEPA filter can capture them.
Urban environment
Dirt, dust, and smoke will invariably enter your home if construction occurs nearby or if you live near a busy road. Some of the visible particles can be cleaned; an air purifier would be helpful for the remaining ones.
Certifications
You’d want air purifiers to be energy efficient because they operate constantly, or at least for 6 to 8 hours while you sleep. So, check for information stating they are energy efficient on the packaging. It is even better if a reputable third-party association or organisation has given it its approval.
Find out if the air purifier has received any certifications from certain organisations. For instance, the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) in the US certifies air purifiers based on their capacity to clean the air.
The idea is to find an air purifier that has received certification from independent agencies for its effectiveness, safety, etc.
